Hi everyone,

First I would like to take the time to thank several people for helping with the Lyons Center event on Saturday: Nola Brewery for donating 2 kegs of beer, La Divina for donating the Gelato, DJ Jubilee for donating his time, Sheriff Gusman for the tents, Breaux Mart for their gift certificate, the Batiste Cultural Arts Academy marching band for donating their time and Kid’s Play NOLA for letting us use their drums.  I’d like to also thank the Faubourg Delachaise for their support including a donation to the booster club and arranging with the Sheriff’s office to get our tents.  Thanks to Arnie Fielkow for coming out and saying a few words.  A big thanks to the Original Prince of Wales and the OGs for an entertaining game of cabbage ball.  Thanks to Coach Gary and his family for cooking fish and fries all day.  And a huge thanks to the many volunteers who helped set-up, worked all day in the heat and then helped with clean up.   I am very much already looking forward to working the Lyons-Burke Booster Club and the Faurbourg Delachaise to start planning an event for next year that will hopefully celebrate the grand re-opening of Lyons Center too!

For those who expressed an interest in a neighborhood watch group please look for an email some time this week with a proposed meeting time and place.

TODAY, Monday, June 20:
“Parasol’s Bar and Restaurant will hold a fundraiser for Chef Nathanial Zimet on Monday June 20th from 7pm til closing, approx. 2am. In addition to our normal menu, we will be grilling burgers, and a variety of sausages outside (weather permitting). We will also have our Americana night of live acoustic music and open mike jam hosted by Rabadash recording artist“Big Daddy O” in our smoke free dining room. Come eat, drink and play to help us support a brother in need. Profits from this night will go to the Chef to be used to help with whatever expenses he has incurred due to his being severely wounded while being robbed.
Thanks, John and Thea Hogan, Proprietors”

Magazine Street Construction:
Paving in Zone 2 (St. Andrew to Napoelon) is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 20. Beginning on Monday, the (Uptown-bound) lakeside lane from St. Andrew to Napoleon will be closed and detoured while crews begin paving operations. This is a moving operation. The lane closure will be in place until all the paving within the lane closure is complete. Paving the entire Zone 2 (two travel lanes and two parking lanes from St. Andrew to Napoleon) should take approximately a week and a half, depending on weather, site conditions, etc. Lane closures will change from day-to-day. Please drive cautiously and follow all posted signs and construction crew member instructions.

Tuesday, June 21:
Ed McGinnis will host soccer practice and scrimmage from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.  Attendance has been light the past few weeks so if you know any girls ages 8 to 12 please send them over to Burke Park.

Friday, June 24:
Nola Brewery is also hosting a fund-raiser in the Channel for Nathanial Zimet. Here is more info from their facebook page (search for “Beers Not Bullets”): “A local chef, Nathanial Zimet, was shot three times on May 22 in an attempted armed robbery. It appears that thankfully he will recover but because of the cost of health care these days his restaurant, Boucherie, has asked for people to make donations in order to help with the costs.  If you’ve ever been to Boucherie you know that the food is fantastic as is the beer selection. The Brooklyn beer dinner that was held in New Orleans was held at Boucherie and was amazing. Nathanial is an outstanding chef, lover of good beer and is one of our own. I think we as the beer community must come together and put on one of our best tastings ever with all proceeds going to help Nathanial.”  Please go here to purchase tickets: http://beersnotbullets.eventbrite.com/21 and here for the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beers-Not-Bullets-a-fundraiser-for-Nathanial-Zimet/203392983038310

Thanks,

Kara

General updates/reminders:
We learned last night that NOPD caught 3 suspects in the 7th street robbery on Monday night.. They also have good leads for the one in the 3300 block of Constance. Officers reminded people to avoid walking home alone after dark if possible.

As part of an increase in police patrol due to recent incidents, the NOPD is focusing on juveniles violating the city curfew. Note that the summer curfew hours are 8 PM to 6 AM Sun-Thurs and 11 PM to 6 AM Fri-Sat. Please make sure your friends, family and neighbors with kids 17 and younger are aware of the hours. Here is a link with more information: http://www.nola.gov/en/sitecore/content/Root/GOVERNMENT/NOPD/Juvenile-Division.aspx

We have also believe that the city has been focusing on illegal vehicles parked in the Channel so please check any vehicles you have parked on public streets.

Finally, if you are interesting in meeting with others about starting a neighborhood watch group in the Channel please email me and we will set up a meeting to discuss further.

Thank you,

Kara
