On August 27, 2010, The Irish Channel community, spearheaded by the leadership of Ed McGinnis, Lee Walker, Cele Husing, Nora McGunnigle, and Linda and Larry Middlebrooks, and in collaboration with the Marriott group of New Orleans, renovated and rejuvenated Burke Park. Almost a hundred volunteers from the community helped put together a playground set, build shade structures and picnic tables, and paint existing structures such as the concrete steps and the iron fence surrounding the park.
On Prep Day, August 25, volunteers were fed by Larry and Linda Middlebrooks and the Rachel Sims Baptist Mission, Stein’s Deli, and Jeff Carreras of Parason’s/Tracey’s. The Marriott group provided lunches for all volunteers on Build Day and also provided another hundred or so volunteers to the effort as well as a first aid tent.
Although the afternoon labor ended early due to a violent thunder and lightning storm, the KaBoom volunteers were able to build a beautiful and safe playground, five shade structures, and 2 picnic tables. Upon completion (after the storm had passed,)Council President Arnie Fielkow addressed the crowd along with our KaBoom coordinator, Danielle Trezek and ICNA representative Ed McGinnis. The ICNA raised $9,000 from the community to support the Burke Park transformation, thanks in large part to Ed McGinnis and Mario Zervigon.
