Text Box: Trash Pickups Making a Difference
Text Box: Now in its fifth month, ICNA’s neighborhood cleanup program has made a visible difference in the Channel, brought neighbors together, and garnered publicity--for the ICNA but more importantly, for the spirit of cooperative community effort that it embodies.
After several random efforts, the program kicked off in its present biweekly form in March. Since then, participation has grown from a handful of people an average of 25 to 30. Our biggest turnout came on May 12, when nearly 50 people hit Sixth and Seventh streets in the wake of several shooting incidents on Sixth. Councilwoman Stacy Head joined us, Text Box: seeking to put a spotlight on both the problem of crime and the importance of neighborhood cooperation, and two NOPD cars accompanied us. Since then we’ve worked our way up the cross streets to Louisiana, Next we’ll start working the uptown-down streets--see the complete schedule for the rest of the year on page 0.
It all this work really worth the effort? At a recent ICNA meeting, we heard one member complain that since the Channel’s biggest problem is crime, street cleanups amount to nothing more than a Band-aid and a waste of time. And for sure, cleaner streets don’t deter crime if you define deterring as stopping this evening’s drug

The Irish Channel Neighborhood Association

The Channel

Text Box: June saw a rash of shooting episodes, most notably around Annunciation and Jackson. While many of these events have had no apparent injuries, it’s been unsettling to say the least. So it’s all the more important that residents get involved in two important upcoming initiatives: the Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 7th, and the Block Captain program, now getting into gear, that will help us organize Neighbor Watches throughout the Channel.
Night Out Against Crime
Tuesday, August 7th is the 24th annual national Night Out Against Crime, and we Text Box: urge all Irish Channel residents to make it a memorable one. You’ll be part of a huge movement--according to its sponsors, last year’s event drew more than 34 million people in the U.S., Canada, and military bases around the world. The program has four goals: Heighten crime and drug

Uniting for Safety

Though Night Out Against Crime is a national event, it couldn’t be more New Orleans; it’s a big party.”
